THE SHELF LIFE OF A SOFTWARE ENGINEER IS SIMILAR TO THAT OF A CRICKETER

03.09.2019

The shelf life a software engineer depends not only on specialist knowledge and the ability to keep their technical skills up-to-date with the latest technologies, but also depends heavily on age, health conditions and work intensity. Nonetheless, there is a solution for this, which is to become a lecturer/professor to keep their passion burning.

When years of experience is a restriction

“The shelf life of a software engineer today is no more than that of a cricketer – about 15 years” – Mr. V.R.Ferose, Managing Director of German software major SAP India R&D Labs (John and Phadnis, 2012). This expresses how hard it is to take on such job. Mukund Mohan, CEO in Residence of Microsoft Accelerator in India stated that the shelf life of a computer programmer with in-depth knowledge into a specific technology would decline even more sharply.

“Freshers learn fast and do things differently, without the baggage of past experience” – Shailesh Thakurdesai, Business Development Manager at Texas Instruments India, commented on the reason as to why college hiring is a priority for companies.

In addition, there is only 19% of software engineer in the U.S. who can still stick with the chosen major for 20 years after graduating. The lightning speed of technological evolution is believed to the reason behind this, requiring them to keep up with its rapid changes. Nevertheless, they can ‘kill two birds with one stone’ by pursuing higher education to become a lecturer/professor to undertake teaching and research within their specialist subject area, and to facilitate students’ career motivation.

Pursuing a new path to keep the passion burning

Nowadays, software engineering is divided into multiple in-depth areas of expertise (i.e. website, games, database, mobile phone and system programming). They can be an app developer, who helps design several essential apps that caters for the needs of our modern lifestyle, resulting in cost optimization. They can also offer services in system upgrade, software repair and data processing to constantly improving the apps through research and development of new technologies.

A professional software engineer who is highly experienced in a diverse environment is believed to be the prefect ‘teacher’ for younger generations. This is believed to be the exact reason for them following a new career path – ideal to keep their passion alive, enhancing chances to continuous learning without much worry about confronting health issues and age discrimination as major obstacles in their career.

To provide clear career prospects for a professional software engineer, International Education Institute (IMRT) – Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City has partnered with University of Bordeaux (France) to deliver a graduate affiliate program – namely Master of Informatics. This allows one to maximize their professional development more effectively and to pursue even higher education more successfully.

University of Bordeaux is an educational institution that is ranked #8 among top universities in France, placing itself in top 151-200 best universities around the world, with some of its popular majors are computer science, medicine & dentistry. Around 4000 lecturers/researchers are based in Bordeaux along with 56,000 students enrolled in nearly 400 courses within various disciplines.

The two-year program is built and designed in the most cost-effective way that allows students to complete their studies in Viet Nam after acquiring 120 credits, following European education system. Modules are focused around project management, practical skill development and design skill improvement to help build safer software. French lecturers will be in charge of delivering theoretical knowledge, whereas Vietnamese lecturers will be responsible for practice sessions.
